Directly from the sub plans:

  • SSR (20 minutes): Have them read their SSR books from the shelves. They know what to do.
  • Writer's Notebook: This is a timed writing assignment. Have them turn in a fresh page in the notebook and date it. Tell them they are to write about another memory that they have marked on their blue print that they made or they can write a journal entry about anything that's been on their mind lately that they want to get out onto paper. They should be writing the whole time.
  • Animal Farm: Have them get their books out and copy the Beasts of Englandsong into their Writer's Notebook. Tell them to make sure it's copied as it's written. From there, they are to analyze the song by annotating it- find elements, words, and meaning behind what the song actually means.
  • After they're done with that, have them answer these questions in their Writer's Notebook as well:
    • 1. Old Major represents Karl Marx, and his dream that he tells the whole barn about is basically Marx's Communist Manifesto (the famous book that explains what communism is for the first time). So, after skimming through his dream explanation again, what is communism according to Old Major?
    • 2. What problems do you foresee happening now that Old Major has planted the rebellion ideas into the farm's heads?
    • 3. What is the plan after rebellion? Why is that a problem? What connections to the allegory that you can predict based on you answer?

Once a quarter, you'll turn in your Writer's Notebook for a grade.
  • Each entry is worth 10 points, must be at LEAST a FULL page
  • make sure you have titles, capitalize your titles
  • make sure the date is on each entry
  • and your name should be somewhere on cover-front or back- of the notebook.

*****Also: NOTHING ELSE should be in the notebook. NO NOTES, nothing but your writing entries we do in the beginning of class. You'll be marked down for lack of organization or I might not grade it at all if it's that bad.
