The video reviews basic functions in CANVAS. I encourage all parents to have their student show them our CANVAS classroom. Students, please show your parents all your assignments, how we take attendance via the "Discussions" Tab in CANVAS, etc...As you can see extra-time is provided for all students to complete assignments! Welcome to World History and CANVAS! This a video made available to ALL student in CANVAS at the beginning of the school year. This was before students had their devices, textbooks etc..., so please keep this in context. My goal then and now, is simply to welcome you and share some positive attitudes toward online learning. I hope you get the spirit of Aloha and Welcome I am sharing. Our online class in CANVAS does have the potential to make learning more enjoyable and teaching more powerful. Having your student get used to CANVAS will help them better prepare for College and Career. Many school districts and universities use CANVAS, so the more students familiarize themselves with this online learning platform, the better chances they will have for success in College. But wait, what about Careers? How does CANVAS help students prepare for a career? Well, the world has changed and Covid-19 just accelerated what was already been taking place over the past 10-15 years, which is a movement toward using technology for work. I grew up in the 1980's and how we apply for jobs in 2020 has drastically changed. Now EVERYTHING IS ONLINE. Don't believe me? Look around you. We now have online banking, online shopping (Amazon), online restaurant reservations, online Uber and Lyft, now we are doing online "tele-medicine" with our doctors, we are doing online school and now job applications are even done online. Can you believe it? Your son or daughter will apply for jobs online, submit writing samples online, take personality tests online, take skill-set tests online, and if they are lucky, they will get a Zoom job-interview, and hopefully get a job at 18 years old. So it really does not matter if we go to college or not, our entire economy has moved toward more integration of online (technology) skills. I did not create this reality. And it does not matter what I think about what is happening. My goal as your World History teacher is the same: to prepare students for College and Career. Now more than ever, we need online-technology skills to compete for jobs, careers and college. So, hang on tight. We can do this together. I am here to help. Aloha. Mr. C.
