Course Description

Advanced English 10 expands students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in alignment with Common Core State Standards. In addition, this course will provide extensive development of the writing process aligned with the Modern Language Association (MLA) format, critical literary response and analysis skills, and cross-curricular study. Students will learn and use strategies that promote rigor in order to support the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards.

Funeral Speeches Writing

You are to compare and/or contrast the rhetorical strategies used by both Brutus and Antony in their funeral speeches. You may use point-by-point method, or block method. Point-by-point is where your paragraph focuses on one type of rhetoric and you analyze how each character uses it. Block method is where you focus on one speech/character per paragraph, and analyze two examples of his most effective rhetoric. This should be a total of two paragraphs. Be sure your claim is clear.

After taking notes on both, answer the following questions:
 

What kind of play is it? Who wrote it? When did he write it? 

What is it about?  

When he wrote it, what were the political concerns at that time? 

What was his source for the play? 

What rhetorical strategy will Brutus use?  

What rhetorical strategy will Antony use?  

Who seems to appeal to ethos more?    

Sonnet Requirements

Sonnet requirements: 

14 lines of iambic pentameter 

3 stanzas of 4 lines (abab rhyme scheme) 

A couplet at the end (gg rhyme scheme) 

Sonnet title is a number (ex: Sonnet 44) 

At least one shortened word to better suit your needs (ex: o’er means over, but is pronounced as one syllable). 

At least two literary devices must be employed. You must identify the devices by highlighting them and analyzing them in the comments or on the bottom of the page.  

This can be about any subject of your choice.
