Sample Thesis Statement

The thesis statement below answers a different prompt, but provides a strong example of how a thesis statement is constructed. Remember that the thesis states the argument/purpose of the essay, and it is only one sentence.

SAMPLE

Step Three:

Create a thesis statement.

Prompt: Analyze a character from the novel and determine his or her significance to the story. Both “round” and “flat” characters can play an important role in literature.

Directions: Identify the piece of literature and its author, states the character being analyzed, describes said character, and provides three reasons why the character is important to the story.

Example: The shallow, pushy, and insincere nature of Miss Stephanie Crawford in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, initially steers the reader away from her but she is pertinent to the story because she not only reinforces the role of gossip in Maycomb, but she provides insight into the townspeople and is a solid example of the stereotypical Maycombian lady figure.
