Course Description Japanese II is a year-long college preparatory course in which students will learn and use speaking, reading, writing, listening skills in Japanese. This course sharpens students’ interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication skills. Each student will expand his/her vocabulary in Japanese, increase his/her ability to manipulate Japanese grammar, increase his/her ability to write kanji, and compare and contrast cultural and linguistic differences between and among English, Japanese, and other world languages and cultures. This course fulfills the Lake Elsinore Unified School District graduation requirement for foreign language/fine arts. This course meets UC/CSU (LOTE “e”) requirements.
Course Standards Students will:
1.0 Demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak and comprehend Japanese at a Novice Mid-High (Formulaic Mid-High: Stage 1) level. (State Standard: Communication)
2.0 Acquire the skills needed to converse with others in Japanese about such themes as after-school activities, eating out, holidays and giving directions. (California State Standard: Communication)
3.0 Become proficient in the use of 80 new kanji. (California State Standard: Communication)
4.0 Understand and use appropriately the present continuous, the plain informal, and conditional forms of verbs. (California State Standard: Communication)
5.0 Deepen their sensitivity to Japanese perspectives and attitudes and will use practical formalities (bowing, shoe removal, etc.) with ease. (California State Standards: Cultures, Connections, Comparisons)
6.0 Interact with authentic materials through the use of such media as internet websites and newspaper ads, television commercials, videos, CDs and DVDs. (California State Standard: Communities)
7.0 Demonstrate an increased awareness of global, cross-cultural and historical issues related to the target culture. (California State Standards: Cultures, Connections, Comparisons)
