Enrichment Activities:
Here’s a list of activities and lessons that I would have been teaching you if we were still in school.
THIS IS ALL OPTIONAL. You can leave your grade the way it is in IC, or you can choose to complete some of these assignments to boost your grade.
With that said, these assignments are technically extra credit. Therefore, whenever you turn in the assignment (via Canvas), I will grade it and give you points based on how WELL you completed the assignment. Some assignments are worth more than others. For example, a formal essay or book project is worth more than writing a free-write or completing a reading quiz.
Remember, you can also just do these purely for your own educational advancement. It would be nice to have some braincells working when you get back to the classroom, right?
List of Activities: detailed directions can be found on Canvas under "enrichment/extra credit"
- -Write the final draft of your argument/position essay on abortion
- -Things Fall Apart: reading quiz #3
- -Thing Fall Apart vs Night: theme analysis assignment
- -Quarantine journal: This is an opportunity to keep track of this unique, and uncertain time in history, and the part you’re playing in it all. It might be neat to hang on to your writing and show your grandkids someday. Record how you’re feeling, what new hobbies you’ve started, projects completed, friends/family you’re keeping in contact with, what you realize now that we’re in quarantine-everyday places, activities, and people taken for granted, people you miss, etc. See more info on Canvas. The more entries, the more points- it's up to you. Due June 5th.
- -Read Oedipus the King:
- Reading quizzes
- Writing activities
- Completing questions/activities in your textbook
- -Write a formal letter or a poem written based on the prompt: “Dear Virus”
- -Read a novel of your choice, or from the list provided, and Zoom with me to discuss/analyze together
- -(Available in May) Read speeches in Shakespeare’s Julius Cesar:
- Analyze for rhetoric
- Write a comparison essay- which speech was better and why?
- -(Available in May) Read Shakespeare’s The Tempest:
- Reading quizzes
- Writing activities
- Completing questions/activities in your textbook

Assignment
I hope you're well and safe. I miss you all dearly.
I'm sure you're wondering what the update is for our class. So here's the latest update for how grades will work this semester and what we'll do for the rest of the semester. Also, make sure that you and your parents watch this video update from the school district: https://www.leusd.k12.ca.us/apps/news/article/1204290
#1: Grades are up to date (March 13th) : I updated your grades recently to include your final draft diction paragraph grade. There's detailed feedback in Canvas if you want to check that out.
I've decided not to include your rough draft progress grade for the position paper because the last week of school was crazy and people were falling behind. I don't want anyone's grades to go down over something that you got done anyway, even if it wasn't on time.
#2: Semester Grades: As of April 9th, your grade for the semester will be posted. So whatever your grade is right now, that's what it will be for the semester UNLESS you would like to complete enrichment/make-up work. You can continue to make-up/improve your grade through June.
If you have a D/F: you will have to complete make-up work and/or redo work that you didn't do well on to begin with, then we can talk about what enrichment activities to do from there. You need to email to see what you can do for this.
If you have a C or B: since this is an honors class, it's naturally difficult to get a B and even harder to get an A in the class. Therefore, the work that it will take to improve your grade will be extensive. Email me and I will give you work to do, but you have to get at least a 95% for your grade to improve, so this isn't going to be easy.
#3: From now until June: For the rest of the semester, I will add what we would have been working on in class to our website so that you can work on that, if you would like. This is an alternative to the district provided enrichment lessons so that you're continuing your education and preparing yourself for next year- especially if you're going in AP Lang or Lit.
I cannot grade you on this, it will just be optional work that you're doing on your own if you want to not miss what we would have been doing if school was actually in session.
#4 Communication: I am available via email. If you ever want to meet "face to face" because that would be easier to teach you how to do certain lessons, we can set up a Zoom meeting, just email me in advance and we can do that. If I'm conducting a class Zoom where we all can meet, I'll update you when that's happening.
#5 Books: Some of you have Night and all of you have Things Fall Apart. They will need to be returned to the school's library when you return to school, otherwise you're held accountable for replacement. So, hold onto them and don't lose them!
#6 Textbooks: Some of you were concerned you didn't have the hardcopy of your textbook because it's in my classroom, but you can access them online with your same school login that you use for email. Here is the link to access your textbook: CLEVER
Click login with active directory> login > scroll to Pearson EasyBridge and select > click Pearson realize > and that will take you to your textbook.
If you need help from there, we can meet via Zoom.
Hope you and your families are well and I hope that you're making the most out of this uncertain time. I'm so sad that our time together has been cut short. You were such a great class and I'm going to miss each of you. We had such a great time together and I'm so proud of you! When we get back to school in the fall, I won't be there (new baby) but I will be back in January. Please come by and visit- I'd love to see you!
Feel free to reach out with any questions you have! Email: [email protected]
Love you all!
Love,
Mrs. Bremer

In response to our country’s increasing political polarization of the surrounding the abortion debate and many states’ fear of the possibility of Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, it is important for citizens to draw their own conclusions about their stance in order to make sound voting decisions. Both sides of the political aisle have changed their rhetoric and use science to prove their points, which increasingly blurs the lines of where people stand, often forcing them to choose polarized views.
Carefully read the following six sources. Then synthesize material from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-written essay in which you develop your position on abortion, including specifications on restrictions, limitations, and your justification for including (or not including these factors).
Your argument should be the focus of your essay. Use the sources to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. Cite your sources using MLA format. 3 page minimum, not including a Works Cited page.
Due:
Assignment
- Editing/revising your abortion position paper
- Revise first: (make your paper better)
- add
- take away
- change
- Edit last: (fix mechanical/spelling/grammar errors)
- Just like we talked about before:
- diction- your wording should focus on stronger argument writing words
- flow/sequence - make sure what your saying makes sense and flows together
- evidence used appropriately- strongly supporting your claim
- grammar/mechanics
- Type your paper using MLA format guidelines and MLA citations (see previous post)
- Revise first: (make your paper better)
- Taking a quiz on Things Fall Apart. I will add this to Canvas soon.
- This is not actually going to be added to the grade book
- Comparing/contrasting Things Fall Apart and Night: find the common themes of these two books. Write thematic statements that portray each author's view on the topic at hand. I'd make this a "T chart" in your notebook. This is harder than it seems!
- Example topic: fathers
- Example thematic statements (what does the author think about this topic based on what you read):
- TFA: Laziness is the worst quality anyone could have, let alone a father. Working hard are toughness are the only quality to your children.
- Night: Fathers are caring, gentle, and our lifelines.
- Example thematic statements (what does the author think about this topic based on what you read):
- Example topic: fathers

- Without moving seats, have them turn to the group around them and they will share their sentences they found that depict Elie Weisel's style.
- The group will then choose which sentence is best
- They will come up with reasons why it's best, then compose a paragraph together. The paragraph needs to be well-written and without errors, as these will be presented tomorrow.
- Once they're done with this they can continue working on their own memoirs, catch up on annotations, get ahead on reading- whatever they need to do to get caught up. No one should be sitting doing nothing. There's lots to do.
