Last week of distance learning

Hello Parents and students,
Update on the last week of distance learning-

ixl homework: I have graded everything turned in so far to canvas. Students, if you have turned in assignments but they are not graded then please read the comments on canvas. Many of you are missing the work on paper which must be turned in and/or the 2nd skill completed in order to get credit. Whatever is not turned in tonight must be emailed to me [email protected] or submitted on parent square over this next week, due June 4 at the very latest.

final project: I wanted to clarify a few things on the final project. The study guide and open note test taken counts for the 20/20 test points (a score of 80 or above will get full points). The creative part is the 15 extra credit points in the test category. Please let me know for those that have completed all ixl skills that wish to complete the test so that we can pick a date next week. The creative part can be emailed to me as well. Due June 4.

Final assignment for Algebra1

After all ixl skills are completed (HW: 31-41) you may complete the final assignment (worth 20 test points + up to 15 extra credit points). Please have your HW completed by at least May 31. Then please email me what day and time that last week June 1,2,3,4 that you would like to take the test.

Part 1: Study Book+ final open note test

Please make a study book based on all the topics we covered  from March (Ch.7 (add/subtract/multiply/factoring, Simplifying radicals (9.1 but use ixl notes instead) and Solving quadratics (rest of Ch.9). 2 sides of a page of paper for each topic (so minimum 3 pages front and back). Include for each topic the terms, definitions, formulas, 5-7 examples and graphs or pictures if applicable.

When you are ready for the test email Mrs. Leibold the date and time you wish to take it and you can complete the test using your study guide and your math notebook (no phone or electronics.

Part 2: Creative piece

Complete ONE Project (examples below). It  must be original, school appropriate and not plagiarized. It must be related to the Algebra content we have studied this school year. It can be based on one topic or of multiple topics. If you have any questions or concerns please message Mrs. Leibold

Game: create a game based on a particular chapter/topic or multiple ones. The game can be  physical and you can send me a video explaining it showing off the cards/pieces etc or it can be electronic.

Story book: Illustrations and appropriate algebra related story line. You can send me a video reading it or pictures of all of the pages.

Song: Can be based off an existing song but with your own lyrics. Send me a picture of the lyrics and a video of you performing it.

Movie—This is something usually students tackle as a group but if you want to do something like this that is fine

Computer program: If you have background in programming and want to write a program based on something we have learned this would be an option.

Something else? Clear with Mrs. Leibold

3 Weeks left!

Hello Parents and students,
We have approximately 3 weeks left until the end of the semester. Many students have not logged into ixl or completed any work. Please message me through parent square or send me an email directly if you have questions regarding your son or daughter and the work they have completed. Another reminder that they must also submit their work on paper too in order to get credit.

Thanks,
Mrs. Leibold

ixl and new hw instructions

1. First look at the individual assignments in canvas. Each will have detailed instructions if you are supposed to review in your book, watch a video, etc. It will also say which skills on ixl to complete
2. Go to ixl.com Your login is your first and last name with the number 115. (example mine would be nikolaleibold115) and your password is your ID number
3. Go to learning and then click at the top where it says "skills your teacher recommends" and find the skills listed in the homework assignment you are supposed to complete.
4. Once you complete the skills with a smart score of 80 or above submit pictures of your score AND your work on paper to canvas.
5. After so many homework assignments completed 20/20 quiz score are awarded. There will be some projects posted later for test points too.

ixL scores

Please ignore the percentages I listed on the last post. For each ixl skill you can stop after you get a SMART goal score of 80 or above. Remember to take a picture of that with your name showing and also submit your on paper work as well too.

Distance learning update-Algebra 1

Hello Algebra 1 parents and students:

The grades currently posted in IC are the 9 week progress report grades and to remind you that grades cannot decrease from here on. I have already dropped one quiz from the gradebook but will not be dropping a second since there are no more mandatory assignments. If your child missed the last factoring quiz (mostly over 7.4,7.5 and a little of 7.6) and would like to make that up please contact me and we can figure out a time for you to give your child the quiz and send me a picture of their work once they finish. This can be done any day of the week whatever works for you and your child. Otherwise I can use that last quiz as the one dropped quiz if you choose.

OLD work: ALL textbook assignments are open in canvas and can be completed for partial points if they are currently listed as 0 points by April 30. After April 30 your child should be working on the new work. If your child has not used their one makeup test yet the last test over 7.1-7.3 can be made up before April 30.  Please email me for details. Khan academy has a section going over adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials to help prepare for the makeup test. The LEUSD enrichment also has a polynomial section as well.

NEW work: I will be posting new assignments for CREDIT weekly on canvas. These could be from our textbook, instructional videos, other online sources such as khan academy and iXL. Remember you will not be penalized if you don’t complete them but I highly suggest you do to keep up with the material and to be prepared especially if you are taking Geometry next year and Algebra 2 the following year. You will have a difficult time with future math classes if you choose to stop now. I know this is different learning style for most of you but I will be available to both parents and students whenever questions arise. Here is an ixl help guide:

https://www.ixl.com/resources/at-home-learning#parent

The first set of assignments are on the ixl site. I would like students to complete all factoring ixl practice sets first, then radicals/square roots, and last solving quadratic equations. I have emailed students (to their school email) their username and password. ixl emails will initially go to the junk/spam folder so please check that first! To access school email I would suggest students download the Microsoft outlook app to make it easier to check. All parent square messages to students will also go to their school email. In order to get credit for the skill set students must get an 80% or above, please screenshot that with your name at the top and submit that paper along with organized work for each problem you completed. If you are having a hard time getting to the 80% please let me know I can help and also point you in the direction of some help videos too. This is the order on ixl I would like you to go in. You will get so many homework points (on canvas) for each skill set completed along with a 20/20 quiz after completing a certain set of skills with an 70% or above.

When you log into ixl at the top it will recommend certain skills that I have checked for you to work on: They are not listed in the order I would like you to do them, here is the correct order:

  1. GCF of monomials
  2. Factor out a monomial
  3. Sort factors of variable expressions
  4. Solve a quadratic equation using the zero product property
  5. Factor quadratics with leading coefficient 1
  6. Factor quadratics with other leading coefficients
  7. Factor quadratics special cases
  8. Simplify radical expressions
  9. Simplify radical expressions with variables
  10. simplify radical expressions involving fractions
  11. multiply radical expressions
  12. add and subtract radical expressions
  13. divide radical expressions
  14. simplify radical expressions mixed review
  15. simplify radical expressions using the distributive property
  16. solve a quadratic equation using square roots
  17. complete the square
  18. solve a quadratic equation by completing the square
  19. using the discriminant
  20. solve a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula

Parents: Most of the factoring skills we covered in class before school finished. The other skills are new and I will be posting later other videos to help with the simplifying radicals and solving quadratic equations.

As you are working through the material please contact me via email, canvas, or remind if you have questions

Algebra 1 OPTIONAL assignments

Hello, I miss you all and I hope you are finding things to keep you occupied in your homes these days. I’m sure you have heard that there is optional material on our district website to keep up with your skills. I have better resources for you if you want to keep sharp with Algebra 1 material, and to prepare for next year.  Please note this is OPTIONAL and not for credit or extra credit. I honestly do not know what will happen with grades this term. Things are changing daily and I will keep you all posted once I hear more from our district.

Khan academy is a great resource and I would register for free as a student. Here are the class codes if it’s easier to join this way:

khanacademy.org

register as a learner. You can just register and look up the topics under the algebra 1 course or you can use these class codes below:

Period 3: QAWEXB8T

Period 6: R35MEGHR

Focus on these three topics: 1. Exponents and square roots (Ch.6 and part of Ch.9 in our textbook) (we would have done another mini unit on radicals/square roots),

2. multiplying and factoring polynomials (Ch.7 in our textbook) ,

and the brand new unit 3.Quadratics (graphs and equations) Ch.8-9 in our textbook.

Each topic has videos and practice quizzes and tests which are graded instantly. Another option is to work through our textbook. We would have finished Ch.7 and then moved on to Ch.8-9 for the remainder of the year. The app Big Ideas Math Videos have video tutorials for each section.

Thanks,

Mrs. Leibold
