English 9 (Period 6)
Course Description
Course Description: Students in this course will read and learn how to carefully analyze a broad range of challenging fiction and nonfiction prose. Close reading and frequent writing will help students develop their ability to work with both text and language, while also strengthening their own composition skills. We will focus on quality rather than quantity. Most assignments will be completed in class; however, students may have homework if they did not finish in class; other homework activities may include independent practice, extension activities, and studying notes and assignments for tests.
Course readings will feature fiction, expository, analytical, personal and argumentative texts from a variety of authors, over a range of centuries. Students will read, examine, and analyze a variety of genres such as articles, novels, short stories, essays, letters, speeches, poems and plays.

- The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
- Unit 5: Journeys of Transformation / The Odyssey
