2020 Back To School Night

hello there and welcome to Elsinore High School back to school night 2020 who would have thought that we be doing this virtually in the manner that we are in this covid are we're all living in your ear but to still give you a glimpse of what's going on in the high school setting for your son or daughter we chose to do it virtually for your safety everybody involved I hope that soon will be of a chance to meet in person one way or another as things get better and we get back to normal but at this point this will have to do I know some of you this might be your first child in high school so this is a new and exciting experience for both you and your kid over some of you this is old news he had multiple kids maybe this is your last going to high school so many questions and you're pretty comfortable with what's going on but I do know what we're doing now in this distance learning mustache certainly are questions and certainly are different than what we've ever done before and so with that said I do want to get a chance to go over there for us all to look at the homepage that is been set up for biology and so that you know what your son and daughter doing whip on a regular basis to get the education to get connected and to hopefully be successful going forward here to share my screen to give you a glimpse of what that looks like in this probably for many do now is not some new but we have call the a home page for this class maximize it there and so here's our biology class I would ever class your son or daughter is in. One through five uses five classes today and so they can connect to me live and in-person 5 days a week you know semester based on that what you see mr. is what we've been doing this week this week is back-to-school we started off with chapter two we've already done two assignments be stupid to see listed here and more added as the week goes on daughter can see what we've already done and what is new so they can stay on top of their assignment there's also a place here for you or your son or daughter to get any type of check now by clicking on this icon it gives you the email to administrator Brandon Stevens at school who handles all 10 questions and problems or you was a parent or student came to your home search you click on this button will take you to the Lake Elsinore Unified School what is the page setup to answer some frequently asked questions and problems that are very common for both parents and students so you can get some results by doing something for yourself contacting Brandon Stevens this is an email contact to do that and so just wanted to make you familiar with the homepage so this is all in the front typically appear at the top if there's anything new will be an announcement saying so right now. There's nothing new for the students at the Elara next some of the other things that are on our home page here I want to show you how to access all of your assignments and how to access path classes others new classes that you or your son or daughter  Miss click on with call Jewel I'll see if modules are different categories of teaching curriculum and instruction you'll see this first one or all the teacher videos based on the the first day of school for us was in person with the teacher was on a so we can click on that if we if we weren't there we needed to know what was on that day all the way to where we are today which is Tuesday the 22nd and what we did in class today and so for your son or daughter now really is a thing of the past because they can access the classroom 24/7 and the teacher 24/7 to the teacher videos can go back and see it again and again and again at 8 need more clarification or there's some sort of misunderstanding but they can't interact with the teacher outside of just seeing them and hearing them. I'm going to be staying here I'll go ahead and do this one here the most recent it'll bring up the video now don't be confused by this when it says media is not loaded you Hector I've already instructed your son and daughter to click on the gate up on that toolbar which will open up the video for the day and then they can watch it mine's taking a good example and so by now clicking on the play button it'll come up all right happy Tuesday Zoom shut down yesterday I apologize for that but the district this is less than I did earlier today and so you've usually at the end of the school day I will post this and make it public so your son or daughter can access it if they were able to attend the zoom meeting but and access it if they just want to redo something was in it so there's always a way that you're son or daughter and get caught up if they fall in behind or even if they happen to a check into class late they can go to the modules and find any of the lessons that were taught by the teacher and see them been recorded then in the other modules that included in this first two weeks of school and assignments that we did there and what was our orientation time and then our first unit which was again almost two weeks talking about motivation and the assignments that we've already completed chapter 1 and hear all the assignments that went there now so if your her daughter can go back to them open them up and complete them and so they can get caught back up if they've fallen behind with some of the coursework things that are really prices for things in this category are going back to the August which means clicking on it won't open it and so if your son or daughter is missing something. is why they can come over here to this inbox and this is a direct email to me and they can ask for a assignment to be opened and then I can and tell him that it's an open-ended how much time they have to get that assignment made up if so usually I will communicate directly with your son or daughter through this inbox which is the fastest and easiest form communicate with them in this distance learning situation we're in so if there's any type of assignment that they can't access they can contact me let me know what it is and I can open it up for them so they can get caught up also for you as a parent one of the things that all of you can access this canvas app it's free you have to register and if you register then you can see what your son or daughter is in the classroom by checking under grades so you have 24/7 access to that the class rates only go ahead and open that for you so you can see all the assignments that we die thus far in the semester of all the students I have in five. So it's over a hundred fifty students but if you find a student here is just as an example you can see overall with their grade is percentage-wise you can see what they've done well what they haven't done well or what might be missing so I could just use this one this person has a low B they did not do the orientation quiz Source Mark read meaning that it is past due and it's so therefore they got zero on it this one they got five out of five years the assignment title at what it's worth 77 at 7 and so we can see what their scores are in blue means is that it's late but there's no penalty for the assignment being late is more important that they get it done it so you can even though it's five out of five and it's late that person still got full credit for getting that done and so this person right here you see there is something that ain't no credit on 4.5 4.5 you got that zero in the beginning is over all this is doing a fairly good job but is not here it is right here is at right now at 81% so you can check where your son or daughter might be and know exactly what they're doing or what they haven't done by checking the Great Book another feature here that might be interesting to Summer is that you can also monitor how much time your son or daughter is actually interacting in school how much time they're actually spending on the computer and sew in in this category it's called people you can click on people and what you can see here is what I see is that this Alison is observing this student Julian Flores to find out if they're coming in in the school every day on a regular basis in their they're doing what they supposed to be doing stuff for those you. you know I'm at work and your son or daughter is telling you that everything's up to date they've spent all day in school well with this little clock over here. This is how much time ever they actually spent doing here we can see that this person in this class has spent 4 hours and 15 minutes in the class this person's than 21 hours a big difference be nice to this person has spent a lot more time in biology and this person has and so we can see these differences here and so will you can find out what you want to hear 40 minutes 12 minutes I'm sorry I 40 hours 12 hours 1 hour almost to we can see whether or not your son or daughter is actually spending any time in a su meeting are they actually there interacting with the assignments and doing it I know something's will get work done faster than others but this is a good clue to use a parent and you can see as a parent their son if you're registered that you can observe your own son check for yourself you can see you can even sit in on a live-in meeting while it's happening and see if your son or daughter has their Windows Zoom meetings are happening you can't necessarily talk to them but you can't message them there's a feature called chat in every Zoom meeting let me take a minute to get out of this out here at the bottom of our meeting you'll see this this chat box and it opens up a window over here on the side or you can send a message to your son or daughter saying hey are you there answer this question or whatever it is you want to do to confirm that because a lot of students were in the habit of clicking in their their Zoom meeting and then disappearing going back to sleep going off and playing a video game or doing and not even being engaged in the zoo mean listening to what the instructions are clicking in to get attendance but not doing any work and so it's that somebody might be interested in Detroit stay on top of your son or daughter by observing them and keeping track of how much time to studying at school I know when you get home and you ask him how the day went and built a spine the numbers don't lie the Great Book doesn't lie the amount of time spent in the class doesn't lie your son or daughter they might and you know better than anyone else on your own life experience with your daughter isn't likely to do that in an academic setting so we are four weeks left before the first report card will be received and that's plenty any of your children to get caught back up and make up any work with any of the collected to do so encourage them to do that as I have already got you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink right so hopefully we can the next 4 weeks intervene with enough time and intervene to try to get them back on on pace so that this first report card is in a disaster and then they end up being I feel kind of hopeless going forward you also let you know that we do have a textbook that were using in this class this is it right here called biology they should have checked this out and receive when they checked out their books the game of the year and we are using this textbook in our lives in meetings as our main resource for research in the topic of biology so we're using that quite a bit so your son or daughter should always have that with them when we're meeting so without being able to answer any of your questions live and I know this is a pre-recorded presentation can stay in touch with me to Paris Square if you have any questions or concerns about what's going on I want to recommend again that you register for canvas so you can have access to the great books do we have to ask me just look it up yourself and see how your son or daughter's doing but again if there's anything that I can do to help your son and daughter be more successful in this distance starting I'm glad to do that encourage them to make up many missing more it's not too late and it's never too late to do the right thing so with that said that this supposed to be within 10 minutes. I hope I didn't go too long and so you can move on to the next class subject matter probably hear a lot of the same things but again this is a new era that were in and hopefully it will be over soon and we can get back to some in person teaching on the high school campus at everything that's an MBA so welcome to Elsinore and I hope the rest of your back-to-school evening is productive by now
