good evening and welcome to back to school night my name is Mrs Betts and I am the band teacher and choir director and I also have a course called music of the 20th century and I look Bridget talking to you about that tonight so first a little bit about myself I'm a proud product of the leusd I went to Gene Hammond Elementary David a brown old school and graduated from Elsinore High School I then went and studied music as my bachelor's degree and education for my Master's Degree from Cal State Fullerton I'm fortunate to unable to return to the community that I grew up in to share my passion for and teach music here since 2007 my primary instruments are piano and flute and I look forward to play more about what this program at our school entails so I'll go on to my second and sixth. Courses which are concert band these courses provide students the opportunity to learn and develop musical skills on band instruments in a performance-based environment right now we are currently rehearsing and getting ready to do Halloween concerts during school in both class. So where looking for a way to perform as soon as possible since we didn't get to do that last year we will have several performances throughout the year there will be a Winter concert open to parents there will also be spray concerts hopefully and as as long as everything goes as planned there should also be some district-wide performances and festivals in the spring semester as well all the grades for this course can be found in Infinite Campus daily class rehearsals are where students earn their class participation points and if they are unable to attend a performance please make sure that I'm notified because excused absences will be giving makeup assignments and the time to complete all of this can be found in my syllabus which is inside of canvas for you to see and read through if you haven't seen it yet this year going on to my third. Class this is the class that acts as a music history course it is the music of the twentieth-century is titled this but it will provide students with an understanding of musical terms and construction to be able to discuss what they hear we listening to music from different styles genres cultures and time periods we will be discussing how music developed over time and is it its effects on society from Antiquity to modern times with an in-depth Focus in the last century that being the 20th century same thing here in case of absences all work in assignments for this course can be found in canvas and the grading for this class can all be found in Infinite Campus the typical structure for the week in this course is that on Monday and Tuesday I do lectures on the unit topic on Wednesdays we do listening log assignments for students listen to pieces of music and write responses about what they're hearing and they get to use this newfound vocabulary that we've been learning on that helps them describe what they hear and the pieces of music that we're listening to and on Thursdays we do it back to squeeze activity to review the information from the unit that we're studying that week and then on Friday we take a quiz so this is pretty straightforward as students missed a quiz on a Friday they always make that quiz up the following Friday because that is basically our quiz day and and makeup day so if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me I have ways for you to reach inside of canvas you can send me messages inside of there as well as through District email for the 4th. Course that I teach that is it's the choir class but it is entitled mixed chorus and that just is there as the title because we use both male and female voices they're mixed in the same Ensemble this course provides students also the opportunity to perform and learn and develop musical skills within the context of vocal performance-based environment all grades for this course can also be found inside of Infinite Campus daily in class rehearsals are where students are in class participation points of course I'm on the performance side of things for this course if they are unable to attend a performance please make sure that I'm notified because again excused absences will be giving makeup assignments and the time to complete them this year we have some people who aren't really in this course for the singing side of it they were they had no other place to put them during fourth. And if you're one of those people the students that fall into the sky Cory will not necessarily be performing in the choir but they are learning the basics of music music reading and notation and they have work that they do each week that satisfies their class participation play through written assignments again you can reach out to me if you have questions I answer things inside of canvas and also inside of a district email that you can and I believe Perry square if you're on parentsquare I could I get those messages and respond to them as well lastly I have a 7th. Marching band and colorguard course this course couples the physical act Liberty of running and stretching and being active with the marching performing arts and it teaches students the basics of marching and colorguard technique alongside with their playing ability and and putting together a show in a performance in our case where a Parade band so the students have already had their first parade this year and it was a very exciting event there's a link to YouTube for for students to see how they did in their performance but also for you parents if you would like to see the performance just ask them to show you that I did communicate that link through remind and you can get the basic idea of what this the students are asked to do and perform for they also perform for football games in other community events if we get called to do it an event then will also be added to our calendar so there is a calendar that runs for the 7th. Class and all the students who are in the course have been doing a great job at tending the rehearsals and making sure that they're taking part in the class to earn their class participation points or the rehearsals satisfy that requirement and then additionally being at performances and make sure I'm sure that if they're not at those performances they are no find me because again same thing as long as I'm notified I can excuse an absence which then gives them the opportunity to have a makeup assignment that gives them the points for a performance that may have been missed so that's also one of our performance classes going on to our program courses which that entails band choir Color Guard marching band any of those courses students are actively creating Music These are considered are Performing Arts ensembles and they have a long-standing tradition of Excellence both on the stage and in developing future musicians so we hope to return to ability to to continue to go to festivals and competitions and do well and represent our school well as well as developing the individual talents of each of the musicians in our groups every year there's at least one music Major that goes on to the to continue studying music at the University level and I'm proud to say that we prepare them to be able to do that if that is their their goal or their dream but on the flip side of that if that is not what they're seeking that's okay too because we make sure that they have a great time while they're in the program and that they do gain a lot of skills and are capable of standing what it takes to be a performer at a high caliber as a musician so we have students some students even it don't major in music but you get a partial scholarship for participating in music Pro who's at the University After High School even though they're majoring in something completely different and that's wonderful and and also an opportunity for students in our program I'm so glad that you have chosen to take are in our program and I hope that you will not only gain and how many musical skills during the school year but will also come to find this program to be a way for you and your family to feel connected to our campus so we look forward to working with your students and children this year and I'm really excited that we're back in person and able to do our performances and kind of resume to what music education was prior to the last school year so welcome to 2021 and 2022 glad to be with you guys this year
