10/23/18 - Rock Recipe Presentations and Data

Groups will present their rock recipes and discuss them as a class.

10/19/18 - TUR : Rock Recipes

In lab groups, create a group presentation on the Ipad using textbook or internet sources...

1.  Choose 1 Rock "Cookie" for each of the following rock types - IGNEOUS, SEDIMENTARY, and METAMORPHIC

2. Write a step by step list of how to make each "cookie"

(Include ingredients, times, temperatures, and environment)

3.  Draw a scientific model for each recipe.

4.  Include a picture and description of what the finished product should look like.

5. Be prepared to discuss and share

Notes: What are the 3 types of Rocks?  How are they made?

10/16/18: TUR - Testing the Properties of Rocks

Plato: TUR --> Course Activity Task 1

Which rocks will be the most similar composition?

Which properties of rocks are most useful in identifying what they are made of?

10/15/18: TUR - Reading - Testing the ID of Minerals

Testing the Identity of Mineral Gems and Jewelry

and/or

Text Pg. 37-48

Write a list of physical properties that can be tested to determine the identity of a mineral.

How could you tell the difference between real gems and fake ones?

10/12/18- TUR : Video Diamond Mines

Choose edpuzzle or youtube to watch the video Modern Marvels: Diamond Mines

Edpuzzle- answer questions
Youtube- 1 pg of written notes

Due by end of period today.

10/11/18 - T.U.R. - Rock Inquiry

***Notebook Check 2 Due Today

Rock Inquiry
  • Observations
    • What things are you curious about this topic?
  • Inferences
    • What do you already know about the topic?
  • Question Formulation Process
    • List A.M.Q.A.P. about the topic
      • As-Many-Questions-As-Possible
    • Evaluate each question for S.M.A.R.T. goals
      • Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant-Timed
  • Choose the best SMART question for your investigation
    • Does __________ affect our ability to identify rocks?

10/9/18 - T.U.R. : Video Minerals and Rocks

Watch the video "Eyewitness: Rocks and Minerals" (search youtube)

Take notes on the uses, history, ingredients, and recipes for rocks and minerals.

Our goal is to find other ways to identify a rock or mineral besides density.

10/8/18: T.U.R. - Intro to Rocks and Minerals

How can we Scientifically Identify Unknown Minerals and Rocks?

Read Textbook Pg. 26-27

OR

Internet Source

Compare and Contrast Rocks and Minerals

Minimum 10 claims

10/8/18: T.U.R. - Density Quiz Pt. 2

Question 1:
Calculate the density of Cube A and D.
Based on density, do you think they are the same "star stuff"
Based on density, do you think each item is the same as an item in the data table?

Question 2:
Calculate the density of Cube B and E
Based on density, do you think they are the same "star stuff"
Based on density, do you think each item is the same as an item in the data table?

Question 3:
Calculate the density of Object A and C COMBINED
Based on Density, do you think the combined density matches up with an item in the data table?
What is one strength and one weakness of density in figuring out what something is made of?

10/5/18: T.U.R. - Density Data Conclusions

Working with your group...

1. Draw a model of the mass, volume, and density of Earth and Jupiter
Earth: Mass - 6   Width - 1
Jupiter: Mass - 333 Width - 11

2. Explain everything the model shows about Earth and Jupiter.

3. What does mass teach us about an object in the universe?  Volume? Density?

4. Make 2 claims about density and the universe. What can Density tell us about the universe and what can't it tell us about the universe (1 strength and 1 weakness of what density can tell scientists about the universe)

5. Based on your observations and calculations of density, propose a new inquiry question for further studies (Think about the inner and outer planet data).  Does _______ affect density in star stuff?
